Presenters: Austin Jacobsen, MA & Gina Young, MSW, LICSW

Austin has nearly a decade of mental health experience, primarily in community-based services. He has a passion for providing accurate diagnoses and believes that effective, client-centered services start with an accurate in-depth diagnosis. Austin has also been training new CBS clinicians on diagnostic assessments for going on 2 years.

Gina has been a licensed clinical social worker for the last 7 years. She has worked in community based services for 12 years and has written diagnostic assessments across case management, crisis stabilization, outpatient, in home therapy, ARMHS and CTSS programs. Gina is passionate about providing ALL clients with a transparent, culturally relevant, and diagnostically thoughtful intake and assessment process.

1. Review and teach the purpose and history of the diagnostic assessment
2. Review and teach the components of a diagnostic assessment per DHS guidelines
3. Understand how to use provisional, other specified, and unspecified diagnoses and understand how to utilize the DSM-5 for differential diagnoses

This training will cover the origins of a diagnostic assessment and the purpose behind it when providing therapy to children, adults, and families. We will be connecting this to the golden thread as we cover the specific components of a DA based on MN DHS standards. We will be reviewing common areas of the DSM-5, the difference between other specified and unspecified diagnoses and when to use either, as well as how to conduct a differential diagnosis and utilize provisional diagnoses.
